- Version 1.3 now live! -

A speed typing game inspired by the 1999 classic "The Typing of the Dead" - based on the concept of using the typing mechanic to advance the narrative.

Made in <72 hours for Mini Jam 100: Overload, with the limitation "Chaos is Everything". The vast majority of assets were made within the jam timeframe, although the intro theme and victory fanfare were taken from an earlier project (Phone Home).

Version 1.3 is now available in browser and to download, and features a new highscore system and online leaderboard (web build only) powered by Silent Wolf. The web version currently stands at version 1.3.1 due to a minor bug fix. The original version published for Mini Jam 100 remains available as a download.

Instructions are provided in-game. If you have any difficulty getting the game to respond to input, please click anywhere within the game screen to ensure the game is active.

Really nice!! Great twist at the end. Nice jokes.

I was looking for some assets from you for a future jam game and found that you made a game that is basically what I wanted to to do lmao, down to the theme and all

Great minds think alike! I'd say go for it anyway, sure there's plenty of room to iterate on it :)

got zero wpm but still made it without losing a life lol

Lol - wpm is totally broken, not sure what's happened but may go back and fix at some point

Glad you survived! Thank you for playing :)

got 45wpm aw shucks

Thanks for playing! If it helps, the wpm feature is definitely a little broken, you may well have done better :)

Awesome game!
I don't really like to play typing games, but I enjoyed this one a lot! It had a really nice pacing, great way of introducing the mechanics and the increasing difficulty of them. Monster name combinations were hilarious! I just wish it wansn't so short heh

Thank you very much! Really glad you enjoyed the game - making the monster name generator was probably the most fun part of this project :)

Great fun and I love your style! It feels a bit long to get from the tutorial to the fighting part where the concept really comes into its own, but I enjoyed this alot. Thanks for your hard work!

Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!

Good point about the pacing  at the start - I'll work on it for future titles :)

This is neat! I found it a little difficult to get started, though: it took me a while to realise that "type the words on screen" were actually the words I needed to type right then. (My first guess was "SPEED" since it was sitting up at the top of the screen, and not immediately obvious it was connected to the slider next to it.)

Also, my score at the end showed as 0wpm, which seems as though it was probably wrong even if the average was brought way down by a long time spent blundering about at the start. I'm not that fussed, though: it's a fun game in its own right co competing for a high score would just be a cherry on top.

Thanks for playing! Very glad you enjoyed it :)

It's a good point on getting started, in retrospect I think I should have kept the speed slider hidden until shortly before enemies start spawning to prevent any confusion.

Also, sorry about the highscore feature - that one's my fault, somewhere along the line I changed something which completely broke it and I've just never gotten around to fixing it. Sure I'll get around to it some day :)

Really appreciate the detailed feedback! I'd love to make a sequel or remake of this at some stage, as I really enjoyed working on it and have a few ideas for some new ways to mix things up, so it's a lot of help :)

I would love to see this continued with the scribe having to go on more adventures! This was such a fun game to play!

Thanks so much! Glad you had a good time playing :)

wow! this is hard and stressful but fun!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)

Very good game idea. The tutorial/intro set the scene and blend into the game nicely. The wave of big guys creates difficulty spike that keeps the game exciting without being too stressful all the time.

Regarding the intro, I think the game will be more replayable if we can skip it the second time around.

Cheers! Now that the jam is over, I've updated the web build to v1.2.1, which has a skippable intro amongst other improvements. Thanks for playing!

That was a little stressful, but fun! Super fun concept.

Thanks so much! Glad you had a good time playing :)
